Friendly Flyers!
Friendly Flyers at Lake Middle School
According to the Olweus Bullying Prevention Program (adopted by Lake Middle School), a person is bullied when he or she is exposed, repeatedly and over time, to negative actions on the part of one or more other persons, and he or she has difficulty defending himself or herself.
In an effort to stop bullying, and any other negative act that is unbecoming of people in general, Lake Middle School has established the Friendly Flyer program. All students took part in monthly class meetings, conducted by Mr. Aaron Bailey, Mrs. Stephanie Franke, and Mr. Ken Mysinger who have been trained specifically to address the issues that arise because of bullying. The meetings were to help students understand that random acts of kindness go a long way, and that these positive actions will help to get them farther along in life.
With these monthly meetings, each quarter we rewarded those who went “above and beyond” what is expected of students. Any students “caught” by teachers doing acts of kindness to help their fellow students were given a Friendly Flyer Card to be placed in a drawing to win prizes. The prizes were our way of showing that we appreciate those students for choosing to be focused on positive and helpful actions, rather than being negative and hurtful.
I am pleased to report that we had a successful first quarter with many acts of kindness, but there is always room for improvement. For the rest of this year, we encourage all students to strive to be Friendly Flyers.
The following students were “caught” doing something good for another student or staff member and have received their prizes. These students should be commended for their efforts.
A special thank you goes out to the teachers who conducted a fundraiser to pay for the prizes: Mrs. Stephanie Franke, Ms. Katie Reynolds, and Mrs. Erin Krift.
